Stephen Mayson
Since 1985, I have been privileged to work with hundreds of law firms, and other professional practices, around the world. I have provided a broad range of advice and consulting services on strategy, management structure, practice area organisation, profitability and valuation, and ownership issues. I also offer non-executive support to firms as a Board or management committee member or chairman, and as a coach to managing partners and other senior lawyers and professional managers.
My Approach
My approach to legal practice is driven by the belief that law is a know-how business, and that strategic and financial success is the result of effective implementation as much as making the right choices. Professional services and knowledge-intensive firms present business needs, cultures and management challenges that may not be experienced in other types of businesses or industries. As a result, the motivation and interests of owners, the knowledge base and culture of the firm, and the needs of clients, must all be sensitively considered if a law firm is to succeed and be sustainable.
I lecture and write widely. I am the author of Making Sense of Law Firms (Oxford University Press), as well as of other books on professional practice, and company law.
I am a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management, of the Institute of Continuing Professional Development, and of the Royal Society of Arts.
