Professor Stephen Mayson
Stephen qualified as a lawyer in 1977, and was for a time a tax lawyer with Clifford-Turner. He became one of the first UK specialist consultants to law offices in 1985. Since that time he has acted as a consultant to hundreds of law firms - including firms in Europe, North America, Australia, New Zealand and South-east Asia. His consulting work now concentrates on strategy, law firm economics and valuation, and ownership issues. His reputation has also led to his advice being sought by chambers, patent attorneys, governments, corporate legal departments, law societies and other professional associations. He also acts as a non-executive member or chairman of law firm boards and management committees, and as coach to managing partners and other senior lawyers and professional managers.
In addition to his work as an independent consultant (which takes up about 80% of his time), Stephen is also Professor of Legal Practice and Director of the Centre for Law Firm Management at Nottingham Law School. He is the 'architect' of the Law School's innovative and successful part-time MBA in Legal Practice (the only MBA of its kind in the world) and Post-Graduate Diploma in the Management of Legal Practice.
Stephen lectures and writes widely. He is the author of Making Sense of Law Firms (Oxford University Press), as well as of other books on professional practice, and company law.
